Product Description
One of the most widely used lining materials in the garment industry. This 180T polyester taffeta is a plain-woven, 100% polyester fabric at 70 GSM — thin enough to sit flat inside a jacket or bag without adding bulk, tough enough to survive years of wear and washing. The 68D × 68D yarn gives it a smooth, low-friction surface that slides easily over inner layers, which is exactly what a lining is supposed to do.
Choose the Right Densit for Your Needs
Taffeta isn't one-size-fits-all. The right density depends on what you're lining or covering:
| Density | Typical uses |
|---|---|
| 180T – 190T (this product) |
Jacket and suit linings, backpack and bag linings, dust covers, curtain backings, promotional umbrellas. The workhorse tier — cost-effective and good enough for most lining jobs. |
| 210T – 230T | Windbreaker shells, raincoats (with PA/PU coating), sportswear outers, tent canopies, wedding and bridal gown structures. Denser weave holds coatings better. |
| 290T – 300T | Down jacket shells (down-proof), sleeping bags, premium luggage linings, evening gowns. Tightest weave — blocks feather penetration and gives a luxury hand-feel. |

FAQ
What does 180T mean in taffeta fabric?
The "T" stands for thread count — the total number of threads per square inch in both warp and weft directions. 180T means a relatively open weave that prioritizes lightness and cost over density. For comparison, 300T taffeta is tight enough to be down-proof. Most garment lining applications only need 180T–190T.
What is the difference between taffeta and pongee lining?
Both are plain-woven polyester, but taffeta has a crisper, stiffer hand-feel with a slight rustle, while pongee is softer and more drapable. Taffeta is the standard choice for structured garments like suits and jackets where the lining needs to hold shape. Pongee works better in casual or lightweight outerwear where soft drape matters more.
Can this fabric be coated for waterproofing?
Yes, but for serious waterproofing we'd normally recommend starting with 190T or 210T as the base — a denser weave holds coatings better and prevents delamination over time. If you only need light water resistance (splash-proof), 180T with PA coating works fine. For full waterproof applications like raincoats or tents, go with 210T + PU coating.
Is 180T taffeta suitable for down jacket linings?
Not as a down-proof layer — the weave isn't tight enough to prevent feather poking. For down jackets you need at least 290T–300T taffeta or a calendered finish. However, 180T works well as an outer shell lining layer that sits between the outer fabric and the down compartments.
How many meters fit in a 20ft container?
About 190,000 meters for this 70g taffeta.
