MH has a liaison office in Colombia and regularly sends domestic staff to be posted overseas. Today, we’ve invited our colleague stationed in Colombia to share some of the unique experiences that life abroad has brought.
Arriving in Colombia: Passion and Opportunity Converge
The moment I stepped out of the terminal, vibrant street art and the hum of laughter greeted me—an electrifying welcome to this land of warmth and energy. It quickly became clear that my South America assignment would be nothing short of extraordinary.
Cultivating the Market, Building a Strong Foundation
As MH’s Sales Manager for Colombia, I oversee our sewing threads and performance fabrics business. Thanks to years of dedicated effort, we’ve earned a stellar reputation here and enjoy a loyal customer base. My daily focus revolves around three pillars:
-
Client Care: Regular onsite visits to track order progress and quality feedback, ensuring seamless delivery and support.
-
Needs Discovery: Collaborating with my team to conduct in-depth interviews, uncovering import requirements for zippers, buttons, and other notions—and crafting turnkey sourcing solutions.
-
Market Intelligence: Monitoring local fabric trends and competitive activity to equip headquarters with real-time insights for new product development and inventory planning.
Overcoming the Language Barrier
While English is useful at times, Spanish is the true passport to business here. Although I’m still in the midst of learning, I practice every day—memorizing industry-specific terms, simulating business dialogues, and seizing every chance for casual conversations. I’m not fully fluent yet, but each attempt brings me one step closer to seamless communication.
Looking Ahead
Every day in Colombia reminds me that sales is more than “selling products”—it’s about “building bridges.” By combining expertise with cultural empathy, I’m excited to explore new horizons and write MH’s next chapter on this passionate soil.
