Denier is the number that does the most work on a ripstop spec sheet, and it means one thing precisely: the mass in grams of 9,000 metres of the yarn. A 70D yarn is not "better" than a 30D yarn, it is simply heavier, and that heavier yarn buys abrasion resistance at the cost of pack weight.
